Uno dei comuni più vasti della Sicilia: 22.900 ettari di seminativi a grano, oliveti, vigne, pascoli e residui di bosco. È in questo paesaggio, a mezza costa sopra la strada per il paese, che si trova il casello San Calogero.
One of the largest municipalities in Sicily: 22,900 hectares of wheat fields, olive groves, vineyards, pastures and woodland. It is in this landscape, on the hillside above the road to the town, that the San Calogero casello stands.
La storia del luogo è antichissima: insediamenti preistorici dal Neolitico, presenza punica e romana, conquista aghlabita nell’840, riconquista normanna nel 1080. Tra dominazioni e feudi, Corleone è sempre rimasta città di campagna, di pane e di olio. Il casello racconta una pagina di questa storia: quella in cui, per circa settant’anni, il treno è stato il filo che teneva insieme il paese e la sua terra.
The history here goes back to prehistory: Neolithic settlements, Punic and Roman presence, Aghlabid conquest in 840, Norman reconquest in 1080. Through changing rulers, Corleone has always remained a country town, of bread and olive oil. The casello tells one chapter of that story: the one in which, for some seventy years, the railway was the thread holding the town and its land together.
Oggi, a restauro concluso, intorno all’edificio è nato un giardino terrazzato di muretti a secco, rosmarino e cipressi (il paesaggio del Corleonese raccolto in pochi metri), mentre dalle finestre lo sguardo scende lungo gli ulivi fino alle case del paese.
Today, with the restoration complete, a terraced garden of dry-stone walls, rosemary and cypresses has grown around the building (the Corleone countryside gathered into a few square metres), while from the windows the eye runs down the olives to the houses of the town.

Il casello è stato recuperato con un restauro conservativo, finanziato dal PNRR per la tutela dell’architettura e del paesaggio rurale. L’obiettivo non è stato fare nuovo, ma restituire all’edificio la sua voce. Quattro principi hanno guidato ogni scelta di cantiere.
The casello was recovered through a conservative restoration, funded by the PNRR programme for the protection of rural architecture and landscape. The aim was not to build anew, but to give the building back its voice. Four principles guided every decision on site.

L'avvio del cantiere
The works begin
Il casello avvolto dal cantiere: ponteggi, betoniera e maestranze al lavoro sulla facciata. Il recupero dell'ex casello San Calogero è finanziato dal PNRR — Ministero della Cultura, Missione 1 — per il restauro del patrimonio architettonico e paesaggistico rurale.
The casello wrapped in its worksite: scaffolding, concrete mixer and crews at work on the facade. The recovery of the former San Calogero casello is funded by the PNRR — Italy's Ministry of Culture, Mission 1 — for the restoration of rural architectural and landscape heritage.
Per mesi l'edificio è tornato a essere un luogo di lavoro, come quando il casellante ne curava il suo tratto di ferrovia. Ogni intervento che segue parte da qui: un casello dimenticato che torna ad avere un destino.
For months the building became a place of work again, as when the trackman tended his stretch of line. Every intervention that follows starts here: a forgotten casello that has a future once more.

Bringing it back to light
Il primo intervento è stato liberare il lotto: taglio della vegetazione infestante che aveva inghiottito l'edificio, riemersione dell'accesso e dei muretti.
The first task was to clear the site: cutting back the invasive vegetation that had swallowed the building, bringing the access and the low walls back to the surface.
Prima di restaurare bisogna poter leggere. Solo dopo la bonifica è tornata visibile la struttura originale, e con essa le scelte da prendere, una per una.
Before you can restore, you have to be able to read. Only after the clearing did the original structure become visible again, and with it the decisions to be made, one by one.
Consolidare le murature
Consolidating the walls
Le murature portanti in pietrame sono state consolidate e risanate, intervenendo sulle fondazioni e sulle parti indebolite dall'abbandono.
The load-bearing stone walls were consolidated and repaired, working on the foundations and on the parts weakened by years of neglect.
Il consolidamento è invisibile a lavori finiti, ma è la condizione di tutto il resto: si conserva ciò che regge, si rinforza ciò che cede, senza rifare da capo.
Consolidation is invisible once the works are done, yet it is the condition for everything else: keep what holds, reinforce what gives way, without rebuilding from scratch.
La pietra a vista
The exposed stone
Sugli spigoli e nei contorni di porte e finestre la pietra calcarea è stata conservata e riportata a vista.
At the corners and around doors and windows, the limestone was kept and brought back into view.
La pietra calcarea a vista è uno degli elementi-firma del casello rurale siciliano. Dichiararla, invece di nasconderla sotto l'intonaco, significa restituire la grammatica costruttiva dell'edificio.
Exposed limestone is one of the signature elements of the Sicilian rural casello. Declaring it, rather than hiding it under plaster, means giving back the building's constructive grammar.
L'arco ricomposto
The recomposed arch
L'arco in pietra dell'ingresso principale è stato ricomposto concio per concio, recuperando gli elementi originali ancora integri.
The stone arch of the main entrance was recomposed block by block, recovering the original pieces that were still sound.
L'arco è la soglia del casello: ricomporlo con la sua pietra significa restituire all'edificio il suo gesto d'ingresso, quello che lo rende riconoscibile da lontano.
The arch is the casello's threshold: rebuilding it with its own stone gives the building back its gesture of welcome, the one that makes it recognisable from afar.
Gli archi interni
The inner arches
Dentro le murature, gli archi interni in pietra e mattoni che scandiscono i passaggi tra gli ambienti sono stati liberati dall'intonaco e riportati a vista.
Within the walls, the stone-and-brick inner arches that mark the passages between rooms were freed from plaster and brought back into view.
Non solo la soglia d'ingresso: anche all'interno la costruzione è fatta di archi. Mostrarli significa lasciar leggere come l'edificio sta in piedi, stanza dopo stanza.
Not only the entrance threshold: inside, too, the building is made of arches. Showing them lets you read how the building stands up, room after room.
L'orditura lignea
The timber framing
La copertura e l'orditura lignea del cornicione sono state restaurate sostituendo soltanto le parti ammalorate.
The roof and the timber framing of the eaves were restored, replacing only the decayed parts.
Sostituire il meno possibile è una scelta di metodo: ogni trave sana che resta è memoria del cantiere originale, ogni innesto nuovo è dichiarato.
Replacing as little as possible is a matter of method: every sound beam that stays is a memory of the original build, every new graft is declared.
Gli infissi in legno
The timber fixtures
Nei vani di porte e finestre sono stati posati i nuovi telai in legno, ricostruiti sulla sagoma di quelli originali, prima di rifinire spalle e architravi a intonaco.
New timber frames, rebuilt to the profile of the originals, were set into the door and window openings before the reveals and lintels were finished in plaster.
Il legno è il materiale degli infissi rurali siciliani: scuri, telai, scale. Sceglierlo di nuovo, invece dell'alluminio, significa conservare il gesto e il calore di una casa di campagna.
Timber is the material of Sicilian rural fixtures: shutters, frames, stairs. Choosing it again, rather than aluminium, keeps the gesture and the warmth of a country house.
L'impianto idrico
The water system
Un collettore con le sue valvole distribuisce l'acqua ai nuovi punti d'uso: le tubazioni corrono lungo le pareti grezze prima di sparire sotto intonaco e pavimento.
A manifold with its valves distributes water to the new fixtures: the pipes run along the rough walls before disappearing beneath plaster and floor.
Un casello nato senza bagni né cucina deve dotarsi degli impianti di una casa contemporanea. La regola resta una: tutto ciò che è tecnico si fa, ma non si vede.
A casello built without bathrooms or kitchen must be fitted with the systems of a modern home. The rule stays the same: everything technical gets done, but stays out of sight.

Services in the slab
I corrugati dell'impianto elettrico vengono distesi sulla rete elettrosaldata, pronti per essere annegati nel getto del massetto.
The electrical conduits are laid out over the welded steel mesh, ready to be embedded in the screed pour.
È il momento in cui si decide dove arriverà la luce. Far passare i cavi nel pavimento, e non a vista sui muri di pietra, è la scelta che lascia le pareti libere di raccontare solo la loro età.
This is the moment when you decide where the light will reach. Running the cables through the floor, rather than across the stone walls, is the choice that leaves the walls free to tell only their age.
Il nuovo massetto
The new screed
Sopra gli impianti si stende a mano il massetto: il piano di posa continuo che riceverà il pavimento e mette in piano gli ambienti.
Over the services, the screed is spread by hand: the continuous bed that will receive the floor and levels the rooms.
È lo strato che non si vedrà mai, eppure regge tutto ciò che si calpesta. Gettarlo a regola d'arte significa che il cotto, sopra, resterà fermo per i prossimi cent'anni.
It is the layer no one will ever see, yet it carries everything you walk on. Casting it properly means the terracotta above will sit still for the next hundred years.
L'impasto a calce
The lime mix
L'intonaco è stato preparato a calce, lavorato in cantiere come si faceva un tempo.
The plaster was prepared with lime, mixed on site the way it once was.
La calce respira e invecchia insieme alla muratura. Non è una scelta nostalgica: è il materiale che lascia traspirare le pareti e ne rispetta il comportamento nel tempo.
Lime breathes and ages together with the masonry. It is not a nostalgic choice: it is the material that lets the walls breathe and respects how they behave over time.
Il colore della calce
The colour of lime
Le pareti sono state intonacate nelle tonalità tipiche della campagna corleonese: ocra e giallo paglia. Dove sono emerse tracce di intonaco storico, sono state conservate.
The walls were plastered in the tones typical of the Corleone countryside: ochre and straw yellow. Where traces of historic plaster emerged, they were kept.
Il colore non è un vezzo estetico, ma la cromia stessa delle case di campagna. Le tracce antiche restano come testimonianza materica.
The colour is not an aesthetic whim but the very hue of country houses. The old traces remain as material evidence.
Il cotto a losanghe
The lozenge terracotta
Il pavimento in cotto, posato a losanghe, è stato recuperato e riportato alla luce negli ambienti interni.
The terracotta floor, laid in a lozenge pattern, was recovered and brought back to light in the interior rooms.
Tetto, infissi e cotto sono il "dentro" del casello: conservarne il legno e la terracotta significa mantenere la temperatura, il suono e la luce degli ambienti originali.
Roof, fixtures and terracotta are the casello's "inside": keeping their timber and clay means preserving the temperature, the sound and the light of the original rooms.
I bagni
The bathrooms
I nuovi servizi sono rivestiti di piastrelle bianche con fascia scura e pavimento in cementine geometriche bianche e nere: sanitari sospesi e doccia a soffitto in un linguaggio d'epoca.
The new bathrooms are clad in white tiles with a dark band and a black-and-white geometric cement-tile floor: wall-hung fixtures and an overhead shower in a period language.
Anche l'ambiente più funzionale parla la lingua della casa: le cementine e la fascia nera non sono un vezzo, ma il modo in cui un servizio contemporaneo entra in punta di piedi in un edificio storico.
Even the most functional room speaks the language of the house: the cement tiles and the black band are no whim, but the way a modern bathroom steps quietly into a historic building.
Il pozzo
The well
Il pozzo in pietra, con la sua calotta a cupola, è stato recuperato come elemento a sé: liberato dalla vegetazione, consolidato nella base in muratura e richiuso con un nuovo sportello.
The stone well, with its domed cap, was recovered as an element in its own right: cleared of vegetation, its masonry base consolidated, and closed again with a new hatch.
Era ridotto a una cupola annerita con uno sportello arrugginito; oggi è di nuovo leggibile. Il pozzo ricorda che il casello non era solo un posto di lavoro, ma una piccola casa di campagna: l'acqua era a pochi passi dalla porta.
It had been reduced to a blackened dome with a rusty hatch; today it can be read again. The well is a reminder that the casello was not only a workplace but a small country home: water was just steps from the door.
I sottoservizi
The services
Nuovi impianti (idrico, elettrico, scarichi) sono stati realizzati e annegati sotto la pavimentazione, con i pozzetti posati a mano.
New services (water, power, drainage) were laid and sunk beneath the paving, with the inspection chambers set by hand.
Perché il casello torni ad accogliere persone serve l'infrastruttura di una casa pubblica. La scelta è nasconderla: tutto ciò che è tecnico sparisce sotto il selciato.
For the casello to welcome people again, it needs the infrastructure of a public building. The choice was to hide it: everything technical disappears beneath the paving.
Il piazzale, a mano
The courtyard, by hand
Il piazzale è stato rifatto massello dopo massello, su letto di sabbia, e compattato con la piastra vibrante.
The courtyard was rebuilt sett by sett, on a bed of sand, and compacted with a vibrating plate.
Posare a mano significa poter assecondare le pendenze e i bordi irregolari dell'edificio storico: il suolo si adatta al casello, non il contrario.
Laying by hand means being able to follow the slopes and the irregular edges of the historic building: the ground adapts to the casello, not the other way round.
I chiusini a raso
The flush covers
I chiusini di ispezione sono stati integrati a raso nel selciato, riempiti con gli stessi masselli del piazzale.
The inspection covers were set flush into the paving, filled with the same setts as the courtyard.
È il dettaglio che misura la cura: anche l'elemento più tecnico è disegnato per scomparire nel disegno del suolo, senza interromperlo.
It is the detail that measures the care: even the most technical element is designed to vanish into the pattern of the ground, without breaking it.
La banchina ritrovata
The platform rediscovered
Il piazzale completato, con i muretti di contenimento intonacati e la fila di lampioni lungo il selciato.
The finished courtyard, with the plastered retaining walls and the row of lamp posts along the paving.
L'edificio non è più una casa privata: lo spazio esterno è ridisegnato per la fruizione pubblica. E i lampioni in fila rievocano una banchina: il segno della ferrovia, tornato visibile nel suolo.
The building is no longer a private home: the outdoor space is redrawn for public use. And the row of lamp posts echoes a platform: the mark of the railway, visible again in the ground.
Grano, olio, vigne, pietra.
Wheat, olive oil, vineyards, stone.
Intorno al casello si apre il paesaggio agricolo del Corleonese: campi di grano e grani antichi, uliveti per l’olio extravergine, vigne, e l’orto a ridosso dell’edificio. A unire ogni cosa, le strade bianche: i percorsi sterrati di pietrame chiaro che disegnano la campagna, e che qui, in larga parte, ricalcano il vecchio sedime della ferrovia.
Around the casello opens the farming landscape of the Corleone hills: fields of wheat and ancient grains, olive groves for extra-virgin oil, vineyards, and the vegetable garden beside the building. Tying it all together, the strade bianche: the pale, unpaved gravel roads that draw the countryside, here in large part following the old railway trackbed.
Sono i prodotti e i luoghi in cui la storia e il futuro del casello si incontrano. Le aziende che li lavorano saranno il prossimo capitolo di questo racconto: la Bottega, dove la terra di Corleone continua a entrare nelle case di chi visita.
